First Prechlorination Prior to Slow
Sand Filters
Water Treatment Facility
Cherry Valley and Rochdale Water District
One of Tata & Howard’s innovative treatment
designs included the utilization of chlorine dioxide
fed to the influent of the slow sand filters in the
Cherry Valley and Rochdale Water District. Since the
District’s existing treatment facility was unable
to meet the CT requirements of the Surface Water Treatment
Rule, Tata & Howard pilot tested this option. As
a result, the low concentration of disinfectant did
not affect the biomass within the filter and by moving
the disinfection application location, the District
post-disinfects with chlorine gas. The modifications
also provided for a significant increase in filter run
times by providing disinfection with the chlorine dioxide.
