Stormwater
Tata & Howard provides full-service stormwater engineering services, ranging from consulting on the priorities of the USEPA Phase II NPDES Small Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit to design of Best Management Practices for management and treatment of site stormwater runoff.
We can advise on innovative technologies that can be used to provide stormwater treatment at a new site, or technologies that can be used to retrofit and existing system.
Stormwater Best Management Practices
We assist communities in incorporating low-impact design (LID) components (such as runoff minimization, infiltration practices, rain gardens, bioretention systems, porous pavement, and vegetated buffers) into their existing site design standards. Whether the goal is improve the water quality in an impaired surface water, increase infiltration to groundwater, or reducing phosphorus in discharge, we can recommend a system that is appropriate for your site and has appropriate maintenance requirements.
Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Communities
We work with a number of communities to evaluate their accomplishments under the 2003 MS4 Permit and help them prepare for (and sustainably finance) the likely changes in the new 2010 MS4 Permit. Regular outfall inspections and monitoring are vital for identifying potential illicit discharges, and a strong stormwater ordinance is vital for providing legal authority and a clear process for eliminating those discharges. Tata & Howard is experienced in both, and has experience completing both dry- and wet-weather outfall inspections. Comprehensive mapping and inspection of stormwater outfalls, catch basins, infrastructure, and Best Management Practices supports an illicit discharge detection program: we provide these services from a number of offices across New England. Our professionals will develop or update Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs) for highway and public works maintenance garages, water and wastewater treatment plants, transfer stations, and other municipal facilities. We work with our clients to develop public education and outreach materials and events that are effective at reaching their target audiences. We provide training to municipalities to facilitate the transition of inspection and documentation responsibilities to their staff.
