Littleton Spectacle Pond Water Treatment Facilities
 |
The Spectacle Pond Water
Treatment Facility has been in operation since 1998.
This unique facility removes iron and manganese
from a 1.5 mgd source well, utilizing a combination
of ozone oxidation followed by ultrafiltration membranes.
This combination of treatment processes also provides
secondary benefits for this well which is under
the influence of groundwater from the adjacent Spectacle
Pond. This combination of processes is the first
of its kind in the U.S. and the facility is the
first municipal application of ultrafiltration in
Massachusetts. |
The
secondary benefits of this process combination include
superior water quality, barrier protection from contaminants
and microorganisms, significant reduction in chemical
use, and minimal waste production. Because the water
quality is superior, the Town was granted a waiver for
chlorination from the DEP. This chlorination waiver
was also a first in Massachusetts. We also provided
assistance in securing approximately $2.0 million in
a grant from the SRF program.
